Maureen Welborn is collecting donations from anyone who wants to assist the tornado victims.
When disaster strikes, Maureen Welborn instinctively wants to help. Though she lives hundreds of miles away, the Buffalo Grove resident converted part of her home into a temporary warehouse as she collected relief items for the victims of the Kansas tornadoes in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. When she learned of the tornadoes that devastated Oklahoma communities this week, she again sprang into action. She and her daughter, Kara Welborn, have designated their home as a community drop-off location for donations to benefit the tornado victims. They are accepting items that will provide immediate aid to the tornado victims. Specific items they are collecting include bottled water, cleaning supplies, diapers, baby food and formula, pet food…

The bill, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would prohibit all teens 17 and younger from using UV tanning beds.
Legislation to ban minors from indoor tanning beds was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday after being approved by the Illinois Senate. House Bill 188, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would ban Illinois minors age 17 and younger from UV tanning beds. Currently, minors ages 14 to 17 are allowed to tan if they provide a parent's signature. Spray-on tanning is exempt from the legislation, as is phototherapy, which applies to situations where a physician supervises tanning when it is necessary to treat a medical condition. Radogno said in a press release that she sponsored the bill to protect Illinois minors from the serious health risks involved with indoor tanning beds. “Not only do children not realize …

Village trustees approved Monday a revised contract with Waste Management that will allow residents to request a smaller trash toter with no impact to their monthly bill. Village Manager Dane Bragg said the renegotiated contract was “in direct response” to the complaints the village received from residents who thought the new cans, which came in 64- and 96-gallon sizes, were too large. “We’ve gotten a lot of complaints, especially from townhouse and condominium associations,” he said. The change means that 35-, 64- and 96-gallon toters will be available for both trash …
