Lacey Horwitch Succumbs to Rare Disease at 10

The young Northbrook resident died in her parents' arms on Tuesday morning.

Lacey Horwitch, 10, died early Tuesday morning after a bout with hemophagocytic lymphohistocytis and thyroid hormone resistance, the Northbrook Star reports. “She will always be our angel,” Lacey's mother, Laura Horwitch wrote in a CaringBridge post, according to the Northbrook Star. She passed away in her parents' arms.  Lacey was diagnosed with the rare disease in August 2011. HLH caused Lacey's immune system to attack her own organs and the cells that produce blood in her bone marrow. After her diagnosis, community members rallied on her behalf, holding bone marrow registry drives in nearby towns and a dance event at Stevenson High School to benefit medical research. The announcement this week that women would no longer be banned from military combat was a big talking point for Patch Facebook fans.

An announcement this week that women would no longer be banned from military combat got a rise out of Patch readers who shared their sometimes surprising opinions on our Facebook pages. "I think women should have the option. Not many will choose it, but I think saying that they couldn't isn't right." "It is a bad idea. Women need to stop trying to be men and men stop trying to be women. We are made different for a reason. To deny reality is to deny the truth. Women carry children. Do they really think it is okay to put innocence in combat situations? I swear women have been brainwashed by the liberal news media and have no logical brains left." "Absolutely a good step forward. The key here is everyone has to be trained and held to the same…
