Vernon Area Library sponsors presentation about Adlai Stevenson, powerful political speechmaker

Learn about the personality and patriotism of former Libertyville resident, Illinois governor, and UN Ambassador Adlai E. Stevenson II on February 5.

The Vernon Area Library and the Stevenson High School Foundation will jointly host a program about the undeniably witty speechmaking of former Illinois governor Adlai E. Stevenson II, on Adlai Stevenson Day, Monday, February 5, from 7-8 p.m. in the Recital Hall at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Ill.

Adored by his followers for his wit and eloquence, disparaged by his opponents for his wisecracks and erudition, Stevenson gained attention for the power of his words during two unsuccessful presidential campaigns. Refusing to repeat speeches along the campaign trail, Stevenson developed a library of one-liners, memorable phrases, and profound statements about the state of affairs. His approach forever changed the way that political candidates and elected officials communicate with the public and media.

This non-partisan Illinois Humanities Council presentation showcases Stevenson’s humor, his dedication to world peace, and his concern for education, patriotism, and participatory democracy.

The event is being produced in part by the Illinois Humanities Council’s Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, a program that provides organizations statewide with affordable, entertaining, and thought-provoking humanities events for their communities.

Road Scholar Joe Bean, the speaker for this program, is a native of Libertyville, the same town that Stevenson called home. During the 1950's, Stevenson was often called "The Man from Libertyville" by the national news media. His former estate is located on Saint Mary’s Road south of Route 60. Now owned by the Lake County Forest Preserve District, its grounds and buildings are open for public exploration and guided tours.
