One Day

Life can be precarious. Enjoy each and every day to its fullest!

First published on December 1, 2011, this article is timeless.  I hope you enjoy it!

Last weekend I saw the following sign posted outside a local church:  “Can you imagine waking up this a.m. having only those items you thanked G-d for yesterday?”

Take a minute to ponder how meaningful the question is.  What were you thankful for today?  What did you take for granted?  I’m afraid many of us would be running around in our birthday suits looking for shelter from the cold.

Many of the people I know live with a “one day” focus.  One day I’ll enjoy myself, my family, my house, or something. BUT TODAY I’VE GOT TO WORK.  There is no time to be thankful.  Our collective drive for more and better forces us to sacrifice today for the good of tomorrow.  I have written about this in the past.

“Can you imagine waking up this a.m. having only those items you thanked G-d for yesterday?”  In a society that cherishes the idea of tomorrow at the expense of today, would we even awaken in the morning?  Were we even thankful for the gift of a day?  Unfortunately, I’m as guilty as the rest of my acquaintances.

Since reading that sign, I find myself enjoying today more and worrying about tomorrow less.  I thank G-d not only for today, but for those who share this day with me.  I am thankful for all the gifts life has bestowed on me.

It is my hope that publishing this article will keep you from wasting a day worrying about holiday shopping, saving for the future, and living with a “one day” mentality.  Be grateful you have today.  Share it with as many people as you can or selfishly enjoy it in solitude.  Never lose sight of what you have.  Do not let what you don’t have blind you.

Remember, a smile is free!  Be happy, be healthy, and have a great summer.
