Stevenson Student Named to Figure Skating Honors Team

Rachel Chang has been named to the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Scholastic Honors team.

A Stevenson High School student is among 10 teens in the nation named to the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Scholastic Honors team

Rachel Chang, a senior, was recognized for her academic achievement, community involvement and her skating.

Chang, who competes at the Junior Ladies level, is a member of the Skokie Valley Skating Club and trains at Twin Rinks Ice Pavilion in Buffalo Grove.

The Vernon Hills resident was awarded a $2,500 scholarship and a $1,000 donation to a charity of her choice. She has selected the St. Mary of Vernon Sharing Hands Food Pantry in Indian Creek, where she volunteers, to receive the money. 

Chang, along with the rest of the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Scholastic Honors Team, was honored Jan. 12 during a ceremony at the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Boston.

To be considered for the award, skaters must be high school juniors or seniors with a grade-point average of at least 3.4. They also must have competed at the novice, junior or senior level during the past two years. Candidates are asked to submit an application and an essay, which are reviewed by a selection panel. 

Chang is an honor roll student at Stevenson who founded and serves as captain of the school’s figure skating team.
