Dunne, DiPrima to Lead Bison Softball

Cary-Grove has one big inning and hands Buffalo Grove its first loss.

There was a gasp in the crowd as the shortstop fell wounded to the ground on Friday night.

Please tell us KC Dunne couldn't be hurt. Not so early in the season.

Wait a minute that's BG's Dunne. It would take more than a spike mark to slow her down.

It's a new season of Buffalo Grove softball. And there are a few familiar faces out there. Dunne is back to claim her spot at shortstop. She will play next year at Western Illinois University. Andrea DiPrima naturally lashed out a pair of clean hits. She will play next for Northwestern University's softball team. Sophomore Erin Barton was back to claim her spot at third base.

On Friday, a very good Cary-Grove team was the foe in this nonconference game at home. And pitcher Maria Dax held the visitors to just one run heading to the sixth inning.

That's where this game got out of hand. Cary-Grove scored six times in the sixth and gave the Bison their first defeat of the season, 7-1.

Now there is also a new face in the Bison dugout coaching this group. Jamie Paul chased flies for Willowbrook High School before taking her softball skills to Eastern Illinois University.

A year ago, she was an assistant coach for this team. Now she's in charge of the Buffalo Grove team.

"We have a lot of potential,'' Paul said. "That is if we work as a team and keep our heads up."

Paul wasn't too disappointed with this defeat. She knew full well the visitors were a talented club.

"We can't let this loss set the tone for the season,'' she said.

BG's offense had a first-inning single from DiPrima and a fourth-inning safety from Dunne. But neither senior moved past second base.

BG put three hits on the board in the home half of the sixth. Barton and DiPrima led off the frame with hits. Danielle Browne also had a hit in the inning but the team didn't score.

Finally in the last at-bats in the seventh, Danni Shapiro's crisp double led off the inning. She would score the only run for her team following an error.

Also on this spring team is Amanda Salzman, Emily Begnel, Sara Penelle, Becca Winter, Kami Hutchings, Ali Levato, Megan Fu and Jessie Lazzara.

The Bison did open the campaign with an 8-2 win over Glenbrook North. DiPrima had a four-hit day in that victory.

BG gets a break in the schedule. On March 26, BG travels to Elgin.
