Bison Prepare to Take on Conant

The Buffalo Grove football team looks to bounce back from the tough assignment against Schaumburg

Buffalo Grove High School football coach Jim Farrell figures the hardest part of the season is behind him and his Bison.

The Bison lost to highly ranked Schaumburg 28-6 on Sept. 3 in a game that was competitive through the first half and would have been more competitive if the Bison offense had taken advantage of the opportunities presented to it.

"We were at 14-6 at halftime and playing right with them,'' Farrell said after a Labor Day workout Monday. "We got to the red zone three times without getting any points. You can't come away with no points and expect to be in the game."

"The great thing about playing Schaumburg is we know every opponent after Schaumburg is going to be a better matchup for us,'' he said. "We lost the game 28-6, but it was a great learning experience. We came away from that game still excited to play football. Defensively we played great even though they were out on the field all night long. We never quit."

The Bison were held to just 10 yards on the ground against the Saxons, who beat two-time champion Maine South the week before they defeated the Bison. But Farrell said he was missing senior left guard Kalvin Booker to injury in that game and he is expected back to play against the visiting Cougars Sept. 10.

"They were swarming to the football, and we had a hard time at the line of scrimmage against them,'' Farrell said. "We were not winning on first down, and we were behind the stick the entire night. (Booker) can help jump-start our run game a little bit."

Buffalo Grove's touchdown against Schaumburg was on a quarterback Mike Garrity to Kevin Tennenbaum late in the second quarter that gave the team a lift going into the second half. But Farrell's group could not turn momentum into points.

The Bison next play unbeaten Conant (2-0), which edged Wheeling last week 13-10. Farrell wants to play a more mistake-free game while executing on the ground.

"We just have to get back to running the football and not dropping the football when we have easy catches,'' Farrell said.

Buffalo Grove takes on Conant in a home game at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10.
