5 Questions to Consider When Purchasing a New Sign

Whether promoting your business, event or a garage sale, a sign is great to get the word out. There are tons of options to choose from when looking to purchase a sign that can make it overwhelming.

Whether you want to promote your business, event or just a casual garage sale, a sign is always a great place to begin to get the word out.  There are tons of options to choose from when looking to purchase a sign that can make it overwhelming.  By asking yourself the questions below, you will be able to narrow down your choices and find the perfect options that will suit your needs.

Will your sign be permanent or temporary? Will your sign be indoor or outdoor?

If you need a sign to last for 5 years, you will obviously be looking at more durable materials than if you only need a sign for one trade show event.  By determining if your sign will be inside or outside, you will be able to find out which material will best perform the job.  If you need a sign for the inside of your business, the cost will be less than that of an outdoor sign.  Signs inside are often cheaper because the materials that are needed don't need to be as sturdy.  If you need an outdoor sign, it’s important to know if there are any restrictions within your city.  When creating your outside sign, you also need to take weather into consideration when deciding on materials.  Custom outdoor signs need to be built to last under all weather conditions specific to your location.  Remember to also place your sign where your customers will be able to easily view it from various perspectives.

Do you need specific colors?

If you want to match elements in your sign to colors within your logo, it’s important that your local sign company is able to do that for you.  However, keep in mind that contrasting colors usually work best for visibility and for allowing your sign to stand out from the crowd.  Colors also have a tendency to evoke different feelings so depending on if you’re going for a professional look versus something that will attract kids, you will want to use colors that will appeal to your target market.  As an example, just think of how cereal boxes made for kids compare to those made for adults.

Will your sign be illuminated?

Day or night, illuminated signs are easy to see and broadcast your name 24/7.  Is it important to you that your customers see your sign at night?  If so, you may want to consider an illuminated sign that will pop when people drive by in the evening.

What information is most important to display?

Do you want your product or service to take center stage on your sign? What about your phone number?  Maybe you want to brand your name so that your company name is most important to display.  If you’re advertising a special event, you may want it to be the most prominent aspect of your sign.  When creating a sign, it’s really important to consider the purpose of your sign and what action you want the viewer to take after seeing it.  By keeping your ideal customer in mind, it will help guide you to choose the elements on your sign that need to be the focal point.

When you focus on the above questions, you will have a better idea of what you’re looking for in a sign.  Of course, experienced sign professionals can always help consult on all of these factors to give you the best and most appropriate sign for your budget.
