Stevenson School Board to Vote on Levy Abatement

The District 125 portion of the annual tax bill would not increase for constituents during the 2010 tax year.

will propose tonight (Dec. 16) a net zero tax increase for the 2010 levy year. If approved, this will mark the fourth time in five years that the Stevenson School Board has adopted an abatement of the annual levy, but the first time it has approved a 100 percent abatement.

The District 125 portion of the annual tax bill would not increase for constituents during the 2010 tax year. Although fluctuations in fair market value affect individual tax bills, the 2010 net zero levy would not increase revenues for the district, nor would it increase the investment asked of taxpayers.

"It is important for Stevenson to understand the economic environment of our community and not add to the frustration of the current recession," School Board President Bruce Lubin said in a news release.

"As housing prices fall, it is imperative the district not add to the burden on taxpayers," Lubin said. "The recession has been difficult for everyone, including residents of our district. Providing for a net zero levy is a way to acknowledge the challenges of our community, as well as evidencing the prudent financial management of the school. The Board of Education believes that in this economy, with eroding support from state and federal programs, the District takes great pride in its ability to provide for a net zero increase for the 2010 tax year."
