Stevenson Offers Job Search Course for Recent College Grads

Stevenson High School alumni who are recent college graduates will be instructed on the job search process.

The Community Foundation is offering a timely class that will help SHS alumni who are recent college graduates land their first job.

“From College to Career,” will help college grads make the transition from grade earner to wage earner. The course will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 18.

The $10 course is open to Stevenson High School alumni who are recent college graduates, as well as those who are current college juniors and seniors. The class will be held in Room 2104 of the west building; participants should park in lot B.

Bob Placko, a 30-year human resources executive at Motorola, will lead the class. For the past seven years, Placko has served in the career-counseling center at Carthage College, where he pioneered a four-week course focused on the job search process.

“The 'College to Career’ course outlines the necessary steps in any job search, from the unique perspective of a recent college graduate,” said Kay Hoogland, co-president of the foundation. “Bob shares many real-life examples of how applicants can increase their prospects of landing a job that aligns with their education and interests. It’s a real confidence builder, besides offering an ‘insider’s view’ of how companies make hiring decisions.”

Foundation Co-President Ellyn Ross added: “This aligns with the Foundation’s mission of connecting community and school. We were concerned about the challenges our alumni face in their job search after college. This course provides some very useful tools and support for our alumni in a tough job market.”
