Stevenson Announces 2012-13 Performing Arts Series

Tickets are now on sale for "Spotlight on Stevenson" events featuring musicians, authors and plays.

The Foundation’s annual Spotlight on Stevenson performing arts series for 2012-13 will feature one of President Barack Obama’s favorite groups, an award-winning musician and children’s book author, and one of the world’s top Beatles tribute bands.

The Gentlemen of Leisure, a Chicago-based act that lists the president among its fans, will lead off the series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 in the Performing Arts Center. The “Gents,” as they’re commonly called, will feature the sounds of Motown and more. Tickets are $15.

Jim Gill, an award-winning musician and children’s book author, brings his energetic banjo playing for an all-ages show at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 in the West Auditorium. Tickets are $8. His newest CD, Music Play for Folks of All Stripes, was named a 2012 Notable Children’s Recording by the American Library Association.

American English, called “the best Beatle band on the planet” in the March 15, 2012 edition of Newsweek magazine, covers the sounds and looks of the Fab Four at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15. The band won top honors at Beatlefest for three consecutive years, and received a “thumbs up” from Paul McCartney.

The SHS Foundation also is sponsoring two children’s plays during the 2012-13 school year. “Alice in Wonderland” will be performed at 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 in the West Auditorium, and “Robin Hood” will take the Little Theatre stage at 11 a.m., and 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2013. Tickets for each play are $5.

The Foundation also is co-sponsoring a free event with the on Wednesday, Sept. 5. “Drumming the Mythic Heart,” an evening of storytelling with Brian Rohr, takes place at 6:30 p.m. in the West Auditorium.
