Vernon Area Library Hosts Lincoln Author

Bestselling author and Lincoln scholar James L. Swanson will discuss his new book, Bloody Crimes: The Chase for Jefferson Davis and the Death Pageant for Lincoln's Corpse, from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 23, 2010 at the .

Swanson will discuss and read from his newest nonfiction work, Bloody Crimes. A book signing will follow. Books will be available for purchase courtesy of Lake Forest Book Store. This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required. The book Bloody Crimes brings to life two epic events of the Civil War era: the chase to apprehend Confederate president and Lincoln assassin suspect Jefferson Davis, and Lincoln's 20-day funeral — the longest, most elaborate funeral in American history. The volume is illustrated with dozens of rare historical images, some never before seen.

Other books by James L. Swanson include New York Times bestseller Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer and the illustrated history Lincoln's Assassins: Their Trial and Execution.

Swanson holds degrees both in history from the University of Chicago and in law from UCLA. He has held a number of government and think-tank posts in Washington, D.C., including at the Department of Justice. He was born on Lincoln's birthday.
