District 96 Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients

Three Stevenson High School seniors received $1,000 scholarships in recognition of their service efforts.

Annually, the District 96 Foundation for Educational Excellence awards college scholarships to graduating seniors who are alumni of . 

The Marc E. Spivak Scholarship recognizes former District 96 students for whom service is a passion. Recipients of this award are focused students who seek to enrich their school or community. They give back by volunteering their time and talent, generating support for a worthy cause, and providing leadership and encouragement. The Foundation awards two Marc E. Spivak $1,000 scholarships in honor of District 96 Foundation founder and former Board of Education President Marc Spivak. 

The 2011 alumna recipient is Connie Lu, who has served others through her high school involvement as a freshman mentor, a student ambassador, a peer tutor, a member of GIVE (Givers of Important Volunteer Efforts), and other service organizations.

The 2011 alumna recipient is Jenny Yan, whose leadership contributed significantly to the success of Spirit Fest and Give-a-Thon and who, among other service initiatives, volunteered and raised funds to benefit senior citizens and families in need. 

In addition, the Foundation presented the Dr. Thomas W. Many Educational Scholarship. Dr. Many retired from District 96 in 2010 following 20 years of service to the District 96 community as a champion for children's learning. The second annual recipient of this $1,000 scholarship is Woodlawn alumnus Sam Caruso, recognized for his active participation and leadership in the Stevenson GIVE program and for his personal initiative in co-founding Repeat Athlete Inc., providing cleaned and reconditioned used cleats to young athletes in need.
