BGHS Names May Students of the Month

An outstanding student has been selected from each academic division at Buffalo Grove High School to be honored as May Student of the Month.

has chosen Students of the Month for May, with selections based on the outstanding efforts and contributions of one student in each of the six divisions of the school.    

Freshman violinist Zoey Allan of Wheeling was nominated as English/Fine Arts Student of the Month by orchestra director Elizabeth Magill. "Zoey's shining smile and positive personality can brighten any rehearsal and help motivate her fellow musicians," Magill said. "She is always the one to ask if anyone needs help, whether it is through the Peer Teaching program, helping clean up after concerts, or any other volunteer work. Additionally, Zoey sees a challenge as an opportunity to learn and gives her best effort in all that she does. While this is only Zoey's first year in the orchestra program, we can look forward to many more with her positive influences."

Senior Mitch Greenberg of Arlington Heights was nominated by Social Science teacher Diane Baldwin as the World Language/Social Science/English Language Learners Student of the Month. "Mitch has contributed tremendously to our American Problems class," Baldwin said.

"Most recently, he role-played a criminal defense attorney in our Class Mock Trial.  His preparation, diligent work ethic, and pride in his team's success were most deserving of this nomination."  

Junior Cherisse Padovano of Buffalo Grove is Student of the Month for Student Services. Individual Resource teacher Laura Stock commended Padovano as an extremely hard-working student who has succeeded in improving the study skills that help her maintain her outstanding grades. "Cherisse is on the diving team and is also extremely creative and talented in art," Stock said. "She plans to major in culinary arts in college. Cherisse also volunteers to help other students both in the resource room and outside of school. She is an outstanding role model for her peers."

The Math/Science department recognized senior Kelly Mahoney of Buffalo Grove for her achievements. Advanced Placement biology teacher Jim Behymer commented, "Kelly has always done well in the class, but she has really turned it up this semester, a trait not commonly seen in seniors. Her lab work is outstanding and her test scores excellent. She actively participates in lecture/discussion/review and displays good understanding of both recent material and material from months ago."      

Junior Olivia Bueno of Arlington Heights was named Physical Education/Health/Driver's Education Student of the Month. P.E. teacher Tim Roe commented, "Olivia is an active young lady who possesses an excellent commitment toward strengthening her fitness level. She is a pleasure to have in class due to her positive nature, as well as her productive leadership skills. Olivia's long-term goals include higher education and an active life style. It seems clear she will succeed at both."

Career and Technical Education selected junior Michael Starzec of Buffalo Grove as the department's honoree. Accounting teacher Tom Mroz said, "Michael is at the top of the class in College Accounting. His debits ALWAYS equal his credits.  Michael is currently a volleyball player. He has already taken Accounting 1 and College Level Accounting, where he displayed his passion to learn about business. He is continually showing off his problem-solving skills when it comes to making the numbers work.  Michael plans on taking Business Law, Business Management and Economics next year."
