BGHS Names March Students of the Month

The following students were honored in March.

has chosen Students of the Month for March, with selections based on the outstanding efforts and contributions of one student in each of the six divisions of the school.         

Senior Ben Harrison of Buffalo Grove was nominated as English/Fine Arts Student of the Month by Director of Bands Ed Jacobi. "Ben has risen to the top level of trumpet players in the country and is considering a career in music education," Jacobi said. "He is very humble and respectful, a wonderful student, and honors all of his music commitments."         

Junior Dulce Covarrubias of Wheeling was nominated by Spanish teacher Zaya Fusco to be honored as the World Language/Social Science/English Language Learners Student of the Month. "Dulce is in my Native Speakers of Spanish 2 class," Fusco said. "She is hardworking, enthusiastic and a great student to have in class. Dulce has worked very hard to pay attention to details such as accent marks and verb tenses. She encourages other students, participates and her sense of humor adds to a positive classroom environment."

Senior Erick Sanchez of Buffalo Grove is Student of the Month for Student Services. "Erick is a motivated student and talented artist who strives for excellence in the classroom and in his artwork," said Speech and Language Clinician Stacy Antkowiak. "He recently won a district-wide logo competition for District 214's Autism Walk. Erick went above and beyond the expectations and will therefore have his logo displayed on posters and t-shirts for the walk. It is my hope that the pride and hard-work that Erick puts into his art provide him with much success after high school."                     

The Math/Science department recognized junior Bertin Montesinos of Wheeling for his achievements. Algebra teacher Kimberly Kolodziej commented, "Bertin came to my class second semester and has been a model student. He has done every assignment asked of him and has earned A's on all tests and quizzes. I had Bertin his sophomore year in Geometry and he has made a remarkable improvement in his attendance, grade and overall academic attitude."

Junior Jamie Varughese of Arlington Heights was named Physical Education/Health/Driver's Education Student of the Month. P.E. teacher Tim Roe commented, "Jamie is a highly motivated young lady and is an outstanding physical education student. She maintains extraordinary fitness scores while participating to the highest level on a daily basis. Jamie enjoys the elements of fitness as well as the competition of the various activities available in class. Varughese represents all positive aspects of our physical education program."     

Career and Technical Education selected senior Shelby Miller of Wheeling as the department's honoree. Graphic arts teacher Sara Cleveland said, "Shelby is currently in the Graphic Arts Tech 4 class where her artist talent and technical attention to detail have helped her to allowed her to produce exceptional projects."
