Aptakisic Junior High Students Celebrate Diversity

Seventh- and eighth-graders spent a week focusing on tolerance and diversity.

students celebrated diversity last week during the school’s fifth annual Mix It Up Week. Its theme, “COEXIST,” emphasized tolerance and diversity education.

Additionally, some students participated in an essay contest, "What Diversity Means to Me."

Seventh-grader Matthew Cabrera’s essay was selected as the winner by a team of administrators. Essays were judged based on their focus on tolerance and diversity.

Mix It Up Week, which ran from Oct. 24-28, also included an assembly by Reality Theatre, an acting group composed of high school students who write and act in their own skits focusing on topics affecting junior high school students. In addition, small group discussions were led by teachers and focused on activities to help understand stereotypes and prejudices. Some students participated in a brainstorming session with Buffalo Grove Trustee Mike Terson, .

Students also participated in a Mix It Up Day at lunch, where they were encouraged to sit at tables different from usual in order to experience opportunities to talk with kids outside of their typical social circles.  

All students received Mix It Up Week: COEXIST magnets to remember the theme of the week.
