WHS News Briefs

What has happened at WHS last week and this week, from fire hazards to football to fund-raisers.

Homecoming Follow-Up
To update about last week's homecoming, for the most part, it went well.  The coronation assembly honored the senior stars and homecoming court.  Jeremy Frederick and Simone Burke, seniors, were crowned homecoming king and queen.  The Italian Club won the door decorating contest.  At the homecoming game, Wheeling lost to Prospect, 12-28.  At the game, the junior class won the spirit stick.
However, during the week, the Wheeling Fire Department ordered student council to take down the gossamer used to decorate the ceiling.  According to Keith MacIsaac, Wheeling fire chief, the gossamer was combustible.  Sandra Chico, student council adviser, felt upset over this because student council had spent $1000 on the gossamer and spent hours putting it up.  She and some student council members attended the Wheeling Village Board meeting on Oct. 3 to speak about this.  However, the village board supported Chief MacIsaac’s decision.

Jazz Band Receives Honor
The Foundation for Music Education chose the WHS jazz band as a National Winner in the "Mark of Excellence - National Jazz Honors" project for the second year in a row.  In this competition, groups record and submit performances, and the judges select the top quarter as National Winners.  161 music ensembles from 32 states competed.

Relay for Life of Wheeling
This week, the Relay for Life of Wheeling committee met on Oct. 4 to discuss committee roles and other plans for the year.  The actual Relay for Life Event will take place May 19 to 20 at WHS.

This Week’s Football Game
On Oct. 6, WHS played against Hersey High School in football.  As a theme, fans wore pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month.  The Wildcats lost, 0-16.

WPAC Fund-raiser
Throughout this week, the Wheeling Political Action Club (WPAC) has sold Cinnabons in order to raise money to plant a tree and buy a plaque in memory of Georgia Blyth, security guard.  Blyth, who was known to WHS students as the “van lady,” passed away this year on March 1.  From Monday to Thursday, students could preorder Cinnabons.  Students could pick on preordered Cinnabons or buy Cinnabons on Friday.  The Cinnabons sold very quickly.

Fusion
Students who participate in Fusion prepare for next week’s performance on at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 13-15, “Bits and Ends, Odds and Pieces,” meaning that one’s trash is another’s treasure.  This is the 16th annual Fusion show.  Diane Rawlinson, dance teacher, and Christine Pacyk, English teacher directed this production.  Tickets cost $6, but if audience members bring an item to donate to Goodwill, they get a $1 discount.

Italian Classes’ Trip to Italy
This spring, the Italian 3, 4 and AP students have the opportunity to go to Italy.  To raise money for the trip, they are selling frozen pizzas and jewelry.  This trip occurs every other year.

Marching Band and Fall Sports Seasons Ending

As the fall sports season ends, sectionals for various fall sports will take place this month.
