Latest News at Wheeling High School

Here are the events that are coming up at Wheeling High School. Other news includes WHS staff receiving training in nanotechnology and more.

At 7 p.m. on Feb. 6 in the school theater, WHS will show the movie “Make Believe, The Battle to Become the World’s Best Teen Magician,” which features Bill Cook, ‘07 alumnus.  This documentary movie is about the six magicians who wanted to earn the title of Teen World Champion. The showing of this movie is free and open to the public.

From Jan. 19 to Jan. 23, Frank Caballero, biology teacher; Karen Linzmeier, chemistry teacher; and Lisa Del Muro, physics and environmental science teacher; attended a NanoCamp at NanoProfessors facilities in Skokie, where they learned about nanotechnology and integrating it into the school curriculum.

Brent Pearlman, former head football coach at Prospect High School, will replace Dave Dunbar, head football coach and math teacher, as head football coach at Wheeling High School for the next season.

WHS participated at the Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA) All State Conference/Festival.  Jenny Garbarz, senior and viola player, was selected for the IMEA Honors Orchestra. Chelsie Coren, junior and clarinet player, and Kylie Gember, junior and flute player; were selected for the IMEA Honors Band.

Orchesis was selected to perform at the Gala Concert of the National High School Dance Festival, which takes place March 10 in Philadelphia. They will dance the piece “Flow.”  WHS is one of the few public schools to be selected for the National High School Dance Festival. In addition, Orchesis will perform at a school concert “Juxtaposition” at 7:30 p.m. from Feb. 23-25 at WHS’s theater. Orchesis will host Dance for Life’s Next Generation at 5 p.m. on March 4. The proceeds of this event go towards Dance for Life and The Children’s Place Assocation.

On Jan. 11, students from Wheeling High School, Buffalo Grove High School, John Hersey High School, Forest View Educational Center and Vanguard School attended an Erika’s Lighthouse training session, which took place at Buffalo Grove High School.  Students learned about depression and suicide awareness, as well learning about paneling and starting an Erika’s Lighthouse group.

Celine Dirkes, sophomore, was selected to compete in the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Contest on Feb. 6 in Chicago, where she will recite a monologue.

The WHS math team won against the other District 214 schools this week.

The 10th annual African American Heritage Show, hosted by the Ebony Club, will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 4 in the WHS theater. Tickets cost $3 for children and $5 for adults. Students will perform music, dancing and poetry.

Italian Night will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 17. There, people can eat Italian food, participate in raffles and watch live performances of students singing Italian songs. Tickets cost $5 for children, $7 for students and $10 for adults.

Latino Club will host a family dance from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Feb. 10 in the cafeteria. Tickets cost $5 for those with a student ID and $7 for those without one.  All proceeds will go towards a senior scholarship.

The Wheeling Public Action Club is having a book drive for students in the Chicago area. Donations can be dropped off at the school library or back or front of the school.
