Village Board Briefs: Sept. 12

The following actions, discussions and announcements took place at Buffalo Grove's Village Board meeting.

  • Larry Swieca was appointed chairman of the village's Commission for Residents with Disabilities (CRD) and Marty Sussman was named vice chairman. Swieca replaces Rick Kahen, who stepped down as chairman but will continue to serve as a commissioner.
  • Village staff members are in the process of revising the personnel manual. The changes, which will address recent changes in federal and state labor and employment law and current human resources practices, will be effective no sooner than Nov. 1.
  • The Village Board received an overview of the Intergovernmental Risk Management Agency, of which the is a charter member.
  • The Village Board received an update on Buffalo Grove’s 2011 capital improvement plan. Fifteen of the 18 projects proposed for the 2011 budget were accepted. A 2012-16 capital improvement plan will be presented to the Village Board on Oct. 3.
  • .
  • Trustees approved a request from The Arbors Condominium Association, 6 Oak Creek Drive, to install a new subdivision sign. Approval was unanimously recommended by the Zoning Board of Appeals.
  • Trustees approved a bid from Twin Supplies to upgrade lighting at the village’s public works facilities. The $64,801.15 project, which will include more energy efficient lighting, will be covered by funds that will be requested through a Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant program.
  • Trustees voted to waive bids and approved the purchase of 875 feet of chain link fence to replace fencing along the east side of Arlington Heights Road near Reservoir #1. The $17,736.25 project will be completed by a contractor hired by the Cook County Highway Department to complete roadwork in that area.

Upcoming meetings and events:

  • A Committee of the Whole meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19 to discuss financial matters pertaining to the 2012 fiscal year budget.
  • A meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at Village Hall for residents of the White Pine Creek area and other residents interested in the village’s stormwater management plan. Officials will provide information about the village’s stormwater management plan, provide educational information such as where residents can dispose of motor oil, white goods, household paint, construction material and more, address the dangers of dumping in the storm sewers and seek public comments regarding the village’s stormwater plan. A special presentation will be given by environmental scientist Renee Wilde and John Briggs, environmental resource engineer with Bonestroo Consulting Engineers. An update about volunteer-driven nature planting maintenance and restoration will also be presented by village resident Sarah Schultz.
  • The village will team with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County to host an electronics recycling event from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 24 at 151 Hastings Drive.
  • The will hold its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 24. Visitors will be able to interact with members of the fire department, get a tour of our fire equipment and see demonstrations.
