VIDEO: Marine Honors Buffalo Grove Fire Department

A flag was flown this year at a military base in Afghanistan in honor of the fire department.

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department was honored earlier this year with a U.S. flag flown over a Marine base in Afghanistan.

Marine Sgt. William Chapman requested that the flag  flown on Feb. 20 be in honor of the department, where his uncles, Jim Hauber and Kevin Hauber, work as firefighters/paramedics.

Chapman, along with the Buffalo Grove Honor Guard, presented the flag during Monday night’s Village Board meeting. It will be placed in a case and displayed at the fire station, Chief Terry Vavra said.

“It may seem like a fairly ordinary occurrence that the Marines would fly an American flag over their base, and that is true,” Vavra said. “What is striking to me is that this soldier thought about his uncles and the Buffalo Grove Fire Department while on his tour of duty. Sgt. Chapman took time out of his duty to request that the base commander and first sergeant gave their approval for this honor. They show their dedication to all of us by thinking of us first.”

Fire department employees will wear red shirts on Fridays as an expression of support for the troops, Vavra said.
