Tonight: Buffalo Grove to Consider Assault Weapon Ban

Buffalo Grove officials will consider adopting a ban on assault weapons within village limits during the June 17 Village Board meeting.

Cook County "already prohibits the manufacturing, sale, offering or displaying for sale, giving, lending, transferring ownership of, acquiring or possessing any assault weapon or large capacity magazine within its jurisdiction," reads the proposed ordinance, which aims to bring the same restrictions to the Lake County portion of the village.

Anyone who currently legally possesses an assault weapon would have 90 days to remove it from the village, modify the weapon to make it inoperable or turn it over to the police department.

The proposal suggests fining violators $500 to $1,000.

An assault weapon ban, which the proposed ordinance says is for the "concern of public health, safety and welfare for the citizens of Buffalo Grove," is being considered as the recently passed concealed carry bill awaits the signature of Gov. Pat Quinn, who is expected to sign or veto the bill by July 9.

If Quinn signs the bill, home rule municipalities would have a 10-day window to pass legislation regulating assault weapons at a local level.

"The Village would also have the ability to amend the ban in the future," reads a summary from village staff to trustees.

Without a local ban, Buffalo Grove "will be prohibited in perpetuity from further regulating assault weapons," the summary reads.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall.
