Supreme Court Ruled DOMA is Unconstitutional

Do you agree with today's ruling that supports the legality of same-sex marriage?

The Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional.

What does this mean? For those who live in a state that has approved same-sex marriage, the federal government must now recognize that. Same-sex marriage is legally recognized in 13 states as of June 2013—California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington, according to Reuters.

Before today, same-sex couples married in a state that recognized same-sex marriage were barred from receiving the same federal benefits other married couples receive, according to Huffington Post.

Here in Illinois, an effort to approve same-sex marriage in Illinois fell short earlier this month, according to CBS News.

The Supreme Court was strongly divided on the issue, as the measure passed with a 5-4 vote. Much of the nation is divided as well.
