Suit Filed Against Advocate for Not Protecting Patient Info

A class-action lawsuit from Advocate patients says the medical group failed to protect their privacy information when it didn't protect four stolen computers.

A new class-action lawsuit filed in Cook County Court this week claims Advocate Medical Group failed to do enough to protect private patient data, the Chicago Tribune reports. The suit says Advocate violated privacy regulations by failing to use encryption and other security measures on four computers that were stolenfrom the Park Ridge offices in July, the publication reports.
Those four computers contained information, including social security numbers and some medical data, on more than 4 million patients, which includes anyone who has visited an Advocate Medical group office or physician from the early 1990s through July, including Advocate offices in Buffalo Grove. State and federal officials also are investigating the breach.
