'Shaking Up' SHS Challengers' Claims

Letter to the Editor

Many think the current Stevenson High School board has been around for too long and needs shaking up. But what needs “shaking up”? Is it our record high ACT scores? Our impressive AP enrollment? The hundreds of clubs we offer our students? The amazing teachers?

What actually needs “shaking up” are two claims the opponents are making. First, they claim Stevenson is slipping in its academic ranking. They refer to data taken from an annual US News & World report. What they don’t tell us is the author of the report admits that a school’s decline in such a ranking has no correlation with excellence because the ranking does not take into account how students perform on the AP tests; it only takes into account how many students take AP tests? So, we are to believe these opponents’ claim that Stevenson is declining because the school doesn’t force every senior to take an AP test or that the myriad students who do take AP tests score exceedingly well?

Second, the opponents claim they support diversity and do not condone censorship. This is in response to allegations to the contrary. Yes, they can play the semantics game but Kathy Powell, in an interview with the school paper, doesn’t see why gay students would need a special dance? And Charles Cardella has publicly lambasted the English department continuously on several book choices.

The bottom line: We are the ones who need to be shaken up: Vote Moons, Lubin, Roberts, and Weisberg.
