Hotel Proposed On Arboretum Golf Club Campus

A national hotel has been proposed for construction alongside the Buffalo Grove course.

Buffalo Grove officials listened Monday to a proposal to build a four-story hotel on campus.

Conceptual plans from Kansas-based Fairway Suites call for a 92-suite national hotel designed to attract business travelers during the week and guests attending weddings and other weekend events at The Arboretum.

Fairway Suites chief executive officer Brian Burton estimated that the hotel would generate 35,000 annual guests who would play 3,500 to 4,000 rounds of golf. Additional revenue would come from food and beverage sales at the facility, he said.

“People like to stay and play and be able to walk home,” he said.

Plans call for an indoor pool and the addition of 26 parking spots on the southeast side of the property. Additional parking, for a total of 164 spots shared by the hotel and golf club, is included in the plan.

A prototype of the hotel-golf course campus was built in Kansas City, and six others are in the planning process, including hotels in Wisconsin and Iowa, Burton said. In addition to working on initial site development, Fairway Suites assists in marketing the hotel/golf course to clients.

Trustee Steve Trilling, who said he has golfed at The Arboretum since the club opened in 1989, said that while he is not opposed to the idea of adding a hotel, he doesn’t want to do so at the expense of the surrounding area. He expressed concerns over the placement of parking lot spaces outlined in preliminary drawings.

“I would not want to shove 20 pounds of amenities into a 10-pound bag. I’m not against the idea on the surface, but you have a lot of details to figure out,” he told Burton.

Village President Jeff Braiman voiced concerns about the impact that hotel construction might have on nearby residents. Burton said a meeting would be arranged with those residents before the project reached the public hearing phase.

Fairway Suites will next submit a formal application to the village, which will determine whether to refer the proposal to the plan commission.
