Buffalo Grove Agrees to Offer Residents Smaller Garbage Cans

Want a smaller trash toter? You can now request a 35-gallon container at no additional cost.

If you don’t generate much trash or your garage is a bit too narrow for the large receptacle that was delivered to your home last month, Buffalo Grove has good news for you.

Village trustees approved Monday a revised contract with Waste Management that will allow residents to request a smaller trash toter with no impact to their monthly bill.

Village Manager Dane Bragg said the renegotiated contract was “in direct response” to the complaints the village received from residents who thought the new cans, which came in 64- and 96-gallon sizes, were too large. “We’ve gotten a lot of complaints, especially from townhouse and condominium associations,” he said.

The change means that 35-, 64- and 96-gallon toters will be available for both trash and recycling. Residents can request a different size toter by calling 1-800-796-9696. Trustee Steve Trilling suggested that residents request and document a reference number from Waste Management.

“I want to thank our residents who were impacted by this for their patience and understanding,” said Trustee Mike Terson.

A Waste Management representative said new toters will be delivered beginning the week of June 24.

There is no fee for those who call by 5:30 p.m. June 7 to request an alternative size. After that, residents will be charged $25 to switch cart sizes. The fee will be waived each May of the contract.

The renegotiated contract between Buffalo Grove and Waste Management extends the agreement through 2019.
