Retiring Fire Officials Spark Series of Promotions

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department is saying goodbye to some longtime employees while celebrating the promotions of others.

As the ushered three experienced staff members into retirement this month, three others were promoted to new ranks.

The department on May 5 promoted Doug Postma from battalion chief to deputy chief; Lt. Shawn Collins to battalion chief and Brian Beck from firefighter paramedic to lieutenant. The next day , followed by Public Education Officer Arthur “Skip” Hart on May 9.

Transitions will continue in the coming weeks, with the retirement of Battalion Chief Larry Swieca on June 30 after more than 35 years of service to the village.

Swieca is a longtime member of both the Citizens Emergency Response Team and the Commission for Residents with Disabilities. He has worked as a hazardous materials technician and is a member of Illinois Task Force One, the state’s search-and-rescue team.

“The diversity of responsibilities makes this position difficult to fill,” Fire Chief Terry Vavra wrote in a memo to staff.

Meanwhile, Kathy Abangan will retire as department secretary on May 31.

“Although each and every member will be missed and leave a void for the department we must continue to provide professional services with commitment, loyalty, integrity and pride,” Vavra told staff.

Ceremonies will be held for each of the retiring and promoted employees.
