Police Blotter: Was it a Bird of ... Pray?

ALARM

Officers responded to an active alarm at 11:05 a.m. March 13 at and found a door unlocked. Officers checked the interior of the church and found a bird flying around. Officers evicted the bird and secured the door. An official was notified.

ANIMALS

A resident reported finding a tan female Yorkshire terrier walking alone at 2:50 p.m. March 13 at Elmwood Drive and White Pine Road. The dog, which did not have a collar, tags or microchip, was taken to Kings Kennel.

A complainant reported at 3:55 p.m. March 13 that a dog was locked in a car for an extended period on the 1-100 block of South McHenry Road. An officer located the car and found the dog lying on the back seat. The sunroof and the windows were all open to allow air inside. The officer located the owner and asked that he walk the dog and give him some water, then park the car in the shade.

BURGLARY

Someone entered an unlocked vehicle and removed the navigation system from the glove box between 9 p.m. March 12 and 7 a.m. March 13 on the 800 block of Checker Drive.

COMPLAINT 

A resident reported a black vehicle did not slow down and drove through a stop sign, causing the resident to slam on her brakes at 5:30 p.m. March 13 on Beverly Lane and Sheridan Road. The resident stated that while driving through the stop sign, the teenaged driver smiled and waved at her. An officer spoke with the other driver, who stated that he did stop and, thinking that the other car on Sheridan also had a stop sign, he pulled out in front of the resident’s car. No complaints were signed. The officer will follow up with driver’s mother.

MISSING PERSON

A daughter reported that her elderly father was missing from the home. The father left for a walk at noon and had not returned by 6:30 p.m. Officers and the K9 team searched the area without success. It later was learned that the father had fallen while walking in Wheeling and had been taken to Glenbrook Hospital.

PHONE HARASSMENT/THREAT

A storeowner reported March 12 that an employee’s ex-husband continually calls the store even after being advised against doing so. An officer spoke with the ex-husband, who denied making any calls to the store.

A resident reported March 13 that his brother, who lives out of state, had called seeking financial assistance, which was refused. The brother, who has a history of violence, threatened to get a gun and harm the resident and his family.

OTHER INCIDENTS

A resident told an officer March 13 that if something happens to him, the responsible person is an acquaintance who lives near Portland, Ore. The resident was aware that this acquaintance and an accomplice committed robberies in a community in Indiana in the early 1990s. The officer contacted that community and spoke to an investigator. The investigator was familiar with the resident and will look for any open cases from that time frame.
