Police Blotter: Slashed Tires, Attempted Scam

These were among the reports released Dec. 3 by the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

ATTEMPTED SCAM

A resident reported receiving a phone call on Dec. 2 from someone who claimed to be from Publisher's Clearing House. The caller stated that the resident won $800,000 and in order to claim the prize she would need to call an administrator.  The resident called the administrator who told the resident she would need to pay $50 and her prize would arrive tax free. The resident hung up.

Note from police: Publisher's Clearing House makes no notifications by phone nor asks for any payment by phone. Further, a $50 payment may sound small but they would ask you to make that payment with a credit card, over the phone. You would have to give the card number, the pin and the expiration date, and before you know it your card is maxed out. Finally, always remember, there is no such thing as tax- free winnings for anything.
