Police Blotter: DUIs, Thefts, Attempted Scams

These were among the reports released Feb. 14 by the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

ALCOHOL

An employee reported that an intoxicated woman entered Extended Stay America at 4:45 a.m. Feb. 13 and did not know her room number. When staff determined that the woman was not a registered guest, she became agitated and knocked over a computer. An officer took the female to the residence of an acquaintance who lives in the area.

Steven A. Brozek, 21, of the 1200 Block of Eric Lane, Hawthorn Woods, was charged with driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed/following too closely and damage to village property at 1:15 a.m. Feb. 12 on Deerfield Parkway east of McHenry Road.

Kyle L. Haug, 27, of the 1600 Block of North Maplewood Avenue, Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence and disregarding a stop sign at 11:55 p.m. Feb. 12 on the 200 block of McHenry Road.

Alecia M. Kavanaugh, 19, of the 1-100 Block of Holly Court, Wheeling, was charged with driving under the influence and speeding at 3 a.m. Feb. 12 on Dundee Road at Arlington Heights Road.

Jacinto Roque-Fermin, 24, of the 800 block of McHenry Road, Wheeling, was charged with driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, driving without insurance and improper lane usage at 1:15 a.m. Feb. 14 on westbound Lake-Cook Road near Raupp Boulevard.

ATTEMPTED SCAM

A resident reported receiving four phone calls on Feb. 13 from a person who stated that the resident’s wife had won a sweepstakes, but he did not know her name. The subject called back stating that the wife had won $850,000 and that all she needed to do was to submit 1 percent of that total for taxes and fees. The resident hung up.  The caller ID number comes back to a generic voice mailbox and the call back number provided by the subject was no longer in service.

A resident reported Feb. 13 that she had received several phone calls advising her that she won $800,000 and that she needed to send $1,400 for taxes and fees before she could collect her winnings. An officer called the caller ID phone number but received no answer.

BATTERY

David A. Strizak, 47, of the 1100 Block of Knollwood Drive, Buffalo Grove, was charged with domestic battery, interfering with the report of domestic violence and disorderly conduct at 6:20 p.m. Feb. 13 on the 1100 block of Knollwood Drive.

MISSING TEEN

A resident reported his 15-year-old nephew missing on Feb. 11. Officers searched for the boy, who was entered into a state database. The teen returned two days later and Omni Youth Services was called to mediate. The boy agreed to return home.

A resident reported Feb. 12 that her 16-year-old daughter had not returned home. While the officer was completing the report, the girl returned home.

PHONE HARASSMENT

A resident reported Feb. 12 that she has received harassing phone messages from her ex-husband, who also tends to show up unannounced. An officer spoke with the ex and advised him that the calls must stop and that he is only to show up with permission. 

STRAY ANIMAL

A resident reported a stray dog around the 100 block of Belaire Drive. An officer recognized the dog as a "frequent fleer" and returned him to his owner, who received a citation.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON

A resident reported a male subject in front of the resident’s house, taking pictures, at 11:40 a.m. Feb. 12. The resident confronted the subject who then became belligerent. The subject left the area. Officers were unable to locate the car.

THEFT

A complainant, whose company plows snow for Burger King, reported that the machine was taken from the Town Center parking lot, 80 N. McHenry Road, between Feb. 7-11. The snow plow was valued at more than $500.

Michael Edwards, 18, of the 2200 block of West Nichols Road, Arlington Heights, was charged with theft after an investigator witness Edwards enter Dominick’s, 1160 West Lake-Cook Road, at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 11, go to the liquor department and leave without paying for anything. When the officer stopped him, Edwards turned over a bottle of rum, police said.

A resident reported that someone made unauthorized charges on her debit card, totaling $501.57, between Nov. 20 and Dec. 20, 2010. The resident still has the card in her possession. The account has been closed.
