Police Blotter: Boy Hits Head on Sled, No One Falls Through Ice

COMPLAINT

A resident reported that his neighbor blew snow onto the resident’s driveway at 8 a.m. Jan. 13. An officer spoke with the neighbor, who apologized and stated he would be more careful in the future.

A customer at a gas station on the 1-100 block of Lake-Cook Road gave the clerk $30 cash to pump gas on pump #11 at 5:50 p.m. Jan. 13. When she went to her car she realized that she was at pump #9 and returned to the clerk to advise him of her mistake. By that time, the customer on pump #11 had already pumped $20 in gas so the clerk only returned $10 to the customer. The customer was upset and the clerk was adamant in not returning the $20.

DRUGS

A official reported that three people were under the influence of marijuana and that he found a quantity of marijuana in their car at 7:40 p.m. Jan. 13. None of the three people claimed ownership to the marijuana found in the car. Charged with possession of marijuana were Rolando R. Torres, 19, of the 1400 block of Palm Drive, Wheeling, a 17-year-old Wheeling resident and a 17-year-old Arlington Heights resident.

FOUND ITEM

While the officer was checking to determine the owner, the phone rang and the owner stated that she lost the phone at the park. The owner came to the station to retrieve her property.

INVESTIGATION

A resident of the 2800 block of White Oak Court reported that he thought he saw a child fall into the pond on the at 3:40 p.m. Jan. 15. Fire and police personnel checked and found no break in the ice. An officer located two youths who had been playing in the area of the pond and they confirmed that neither of them fell into the pond and that they were the only two there. Both were turned over to their mother, who stated that the boys would stay off the golf course property.

PHONE THREAT

A resident reported receiving threatening text messages from his ex-girlfriend between Jan. 13-15. An officer contacted the ex-girlfriend, who stated that it was the resident who was contacting her, 30 times in one day.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

A resident of the 500 block of Harris Drive reported that his neighbor’s snow plow driver deposited snow onto the parkway across the street and, in doing so, damaged the parkway grass between 3-9 p.m. Jan. 12.

SUSPICIOUS EMAIL

A bank official on the 200 block of North Buffalo Grove Road received an email Jan. 11 from an account of a known customer, requesting a wire transfer of $51,520 to a bank in Ohio. The official called the customer, who stated that he made no such request.

THEFT

A resident received a phone call at noon Jan. 11 advising her that she won $1 million from Publisher’s Clearing House and that she needed to send a Western Union money gram in the amount of $400 to cover fees and expenses. The resident told the caller she did not have $400, so she was told to send only $100. The resident sent the money gram to a recipient in Maryland, as instructed. An officer traced the caller’s phone number to Jamaica.

A cab driver reported that his rider stated that he had to go into the house to retrieve the $68 fare from Chicago at 5 a.m. Jan. 15 on the 900 block of Sussex Court. The rider walked around the side of the house and disappeared. Officers followed footprints into Wheeling and then lost the track.

Lewis E. Hall, 56, of the 3100 block of Martin L. King Drive, North Chicago, and Charles D. Hood, 50, of the 1100 block of Florence, Evanston, were charged with theft Jan. 3 at .

TRESPASSING

Anna Chimanski, 27, of the 100 block of Coral Lane, Wheeling, was charged with trespass to property at 12:40 a.m. Jan. 16 at .

WELL-BEING CHECK

A resident of the 1-100 block of Bernard Drive reported at 10:10 a.m. Jan. 15 that an elderly man who was walking in the area appeared to be lost. An officer located the man,  who stated that he was walking to the library in Wheeling. The library was not open at that time, so the officer called man’s daughter, who stated that her father left the house without telling anyone. He was given a ride home.

A father requested that paramedics check his son, who struck his head on another sled at 11:40 a.m. Jan. 15 at Willow Stream Park. The boy was checked and found to be alert and uninjured.

OTHER INCIDENTS

A resident reported that her son was had an online encounter with someone who told the son she was going to get him and displayed his address. An officer discussed Internet issues with the son and placed an extra watch on the residence.

A business owner on the 400 block of West Dundee Road reported that construction workers shut off the water to his business even though his wife asked them not to between 8-11:15 a.m. Jan. 14. The owner stated that when he went to speak with the workers he saw that they were dealing with an emergency, but he was concerned that there was no licensed plumber at the site. Attempts to contact property management failed. The leaking water pipe was sealed.

A customer at a restaurant on the 100 block of West Dundee Road reported that person he did not know came up to him and yelled about money owed at 8:05 p.m. Jan. 14. The person was found outside the restaurant and was advised that he was not welcome inside. 

A complainant reported he found a quantity of 12 gauge shotgun shells while cleaning out his parents’ garage on Jan. 15. The shells were turned in for destruction and were placed into property.

A resident reported that his neighbor’s snow plow driver left a large quantity of snow in the roadway at noon Jan. 15. An officer attempted to contact the neighbor but no one was at home.
