Car Catches Fire, Roads Closed

Portions of Lake-Cook and McHenry roads were closed Sunday evening in Buffalo Grove following a car fire.

No one was injured Sunday evening when an SUV caught on fire at the intersection of Lake-Cook Road and Route 83 in Buffalo Grove.

Police and fire crews responded to the call at 5:42 p.m., when a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer began smoking in the middle of the intersection.

"The family got out of it, no problem," Police Cpl. Vince Positano said.

Westbound Lake-Cook Road was temporarily closed at McHenry, and northbound Buffalo Grove Road was closed just north of the entrance. Black smoke could be seen from The Grove shopping center, anchored by .

Positano said an electrical problem possibly caused what developed into a full blaze. The vehicle "just started smoking inside" and within minutes "there were flames coming out all the windows," Positano said.

Even as one lane of westbound traffic reopened around 6 p.m., firefighters continued to douse the interior of the vehicle, which was left facing east on Lake-Cook Road.

All of the roads were reopened at 6:35 p.m., Positano said.
