Buffalo Grove Police Reveal 5 Most Crash-Prone Intersections

Enforcement efforts resulted in the removal of the most dangerous intersection of 2011 from the 2012 list.

A yearlong effort to improve safety at one Buffalo Grove’s most crash-prone intersections has apparently paid off. In announcing the five intersections with the most accidents in 2012, Buffalo Grove police said the most dangerous intersection of 2011 was bumped from the list.

“We put forth a lot of effort to get rid of our number one crash location last year,” said Sgt. Mike Rodriguez.

Enforcement efforts at that location — Buffalo Grove Road and short Aptakisic Road (just south of Lou Malnati’s) — included visible and covert efforts such as message boards and heightened seat belt enforcement, he said.

Replacing that location in 2012 was the intersection of Lake-Cook and Buffalo Grove roads, which was also on the 2011 list.

In all, police devoted 217 hours last year to the highest crash locations, up from 88 hours in 2011, Rodriguez said.

Of the 1,258 total crashes reported in 2012, Rodriguez said 125 occurred at the following locations, which make up the latest Top 5 list:

  • Lake-Cook Road and Buffalo Grove Road (31)
  • Lake-Cook Road and McHenry Road (27)
  • Lake-Cook Road and Arlington Heights Road (24)
  • Arlington Heights Road and McHenry Road (22)
  • Buffalo Grove Road and Dundee Road (21)

Efforts will continue to improve traffic safety at those locations, he said, adding that data already shows some good news.

“Over 95 percent of people who drive through Buffalo Grove wear their seat belts. That’s huge,” he said. “Our education programs are definitely working.”
