Buffalo Grove Police Remind Motorists About School-Related Traffic Laws

Information submitted by the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

The Buffalo Grove police department is reminding parents and all drivers to follow the rules of the road when driving near schools.

The police department wants motorists to remember that school will be starting again soon. In Illinois, the school zone speed limit is 20 mph which school is in session and children are present. School zone hours usually are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., while children are outside the school building and near the road.

“If you are caught by one of my officers for speeding in a school zone, you will be cited and will have to appear in court,” stated Sgt. Mike Rodriguez of BGPD’s Traffic Division in a press release. “With this type of ticket, you're looking at a minimum fine of $150 plus court costs—with no chance at supervision.”

There are a couple of other laws that drivers should be aware of when traveling through Illinois school zones. All school zones are no passing zones.  Also, motorists approaching a school crossing area must stop and yield the right of way to all pedestrians in the crosswalk. When a driver sees the crosswalk come into view, they should be prepared to stop.

“There’s no worse crash scene than one involving a child. Please think safety first.  Hang up, slow down, and be aware when travelling in a school zone. Let’s all take the time to make sure our children are safe going to and coming from school this upcoming school year,” stated Rodriguez.
