Buffalo Grove Police to Pass the Torch for Special Olympics

Police are asking the community to join them in the Torch Run, along with officers from north to Gurnee and south to Lincolnwood Sunday, June 10.

The has participated in the annual Special Olympics Torch Run for more than 30 years, and this year the tradition continues.

On Sunday, June 10, police officers from Buffalo Grove, Deerfield and Northbrook will accept the torch starting at Aptakisic Road and Milwaukee Avenue and run south on Milwaukee Avenue to Lake Cook Road where they will pass it on to Wheeling police officers, according to Buffalo Grove Police Commander Jim Newton.

Commander Newton has been participating in the Torch Run-one
of the largest fundraisers for the Special Olympics-for the last 33 years, and said residents are invited to run along with the roughly 15 Buffalo Grove police officers that have already signed up.

“Anyone is welcome to run with us-we are proud that we have played our small part in helping this effort to continue to support the Special Olympics,” Newton said.

The Torch Run will kick off at 6:15a.m. in Gurnee at Milwaukee Avenue and Grand Avenue and head south through Libertyville, Vernon Hills and Lincolnshire before reaching Buffalo Grove.

The passing of the torch in Buffalo Grove is expected to occur just before 9:00a.m.

The northern Chicago suburbs run will end in Proesel Park in Lincolnwood around noon.

The final part of the Torch Run will actually occur on June 15 at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois on the first day of the State Summer Games.

If you’re not included to take part in the run, you can support your local police in another way by sponsoring them.

Checks can be made payable to ‘Illinois Special Olympics’ and can be dropped off or mailed to the Buffalo Grove Police Department, 46 Raupp Boulevard.
