BG Police Officers Receive Commendations

Five members of the department were recognized by the Village Board for service to the community.

Three Buffalo Grove police officers were honored last month for exemplary service to the village, while two others were recognized for departmental promotions.

Officials publicly commended James Dunne, who retired in February as deputy chief after 31 years of service to the . Over the years, Dunne worked as a general service officer, patrol officer, field training officer, corporal, sergeant and commander before being named deputy chief. Dunne left Buffalo Grove to serve as police chief in Prospect Heights.

A resolution honoring his service to Buffalo Grove noted that Dunne built “positive relationships with the community that enhanced the department’s effectiveness” and praised his “integrity, character and professionalism.”

Meanwhile, Cpl. Vince Positano was named 2010 Employee of the Year for his work on the department’s upgraded firearms range. He redesigned the department’s qualification course and obtained its approval from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Board, according to the village. He also taught a firearms course for the Citizens Police Academy and provided an overview of firearms and use of force to the police and fire commission. The Buffalo Grove Rotary Club presented him with his award.

Also honored was Investigator Michelle Kondrat, who received the 2010 Special Commendation for Exceptional Service. Kondrat transitioned from school resource officer to investigator in 2010, when she handled cases ranging from sexual assault investigations to burglaries. She also initiated drug investigations in which she dealt with informants and conducted hand-to-hand drug deals, leading to the arrests of dealers in 2010.

The village also recognized Michael Szos, who has been promoted to commander, and Michael Rodriguez, who has been promoted to sergeant.
