Sente Stands Up To Leadership; Proposes Term Limits for Legislative Leaders

Vernon Hills, Ill. – State Representative Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, filed a proposal on Tuesday to place term limits on legislative leaders.

“As I walk door-to-door and meet with members of our community, I constantly hear that many people feel apathetic about state government because they believe the power is in the hands of too few, and they feel that nothing ever changes,” Sente said. “In response to that, I’ve sought out ways to make government more transparent and accountable, including moving the budgeting process out of the hands of only leadership and into bipartisan committees, so that proposals can better reflect the variety of needs of the people of Illinois.”

House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 35 proposes to limit a person’s total service in the capacity of Speaker of the House, President of the Senate, Minority Leader of the House, or Minority Leader of the Senate to a maximum of 14 years.

“Several other states have successfully adopted similar policies on the length of time an individual can serve as a legislative leader,” Sente said. “By supporting a periodic change in leadership, we hope that fresh, new ideas are allowed to flow freely, and that all voices will have an equal opportunity to be heard.”
