Sente Encourages Local Women to Continue Education through Scholarship

Springfield, Ill. – State Representative Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, is encouraging mature women interested in continuing their undergraduate education to apply for the Conference of Women Legislators (COWL) 2014-2015 Scholarship Award Program.

“This scholarship opportunity exists to provide financial assistance to women who may have had their educational pursuits put on standby due to alternate priorities or unforeseen events in their lives,” Sente said. “By taking advantage of available aid, women who may have been unable to afford a degree will be able to receive the support they need to complete their college education.”

COWL is a non-profit organization composed of a bipartisan, bicameral coalition of women legislators from the Illinois General Assembly. The scholarship program is an initiative to help promote economic independence, community service and leadership development for Illinois women who wish to pursue higher education later in life.

Applicants are required to enroll in an Illinois accredited college or university for a minimum of six credit hours to qualify, making the scholarships available to a part-time student. In addition to academic achievement, the scholarship committee also considers volunteer or paid community service work that benefited women in transition. Applications must be postmarked by March 31, 2014. Awardees will be notified of the decisions by April 30, 2014. Scholarship applications may be downloaded from the COWL website at www.cowlil.com.

“Returning to school as an older adult is not uncommon, but unfortunately financial aid can be challenging for these non-traditional students to secure,” Sente said. “Everyone deserves the opportunity to access a quality education, regardless of age, and the COWL scholarship is one way we can help those willing to gain a competitive edge later in life.”
