New Year, New Laws; Sente Legislation to Take Effect in 2014

Vernon Hills, Ill. – Several new measures introduced by State Rep. Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, will go into effect on January 1, 2014.

"While much was accomplished this past session, there is still a lot more to do to get our state back on the right track,” Sente said. “I am committed to continuing my mission of promoting strategic economic development, improving our education system, advocating for responsible state-budgeting, increasing public safety, and pushing for a more open and transparent government.”

An advocate for youth and public safety, Sente introduced House Bill 226, allowing 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections if they will be 18 by the general election; House Bill 1206, codifying Mutual Aid Box Alarm Systems’ status as a governmental entity into law and thereby grant them property tax exemption; and House Bill 1462, requiring the state to update accessibility codes for public buildings by using the federal Americans with Disabilities Act’s Standards for Accessible Design as a model.

"As we enter into the New Year, I look forward to gathering more feedback on legislation from constituents by walking door-to-door throughout neighborhoods, making calls to residents, and hosting regular outreach events, like my Coffee Shop Stops," Sente said. "Many ideas for legislation start as conversations with members of our community."
