Sente Bill Granting Suffrage at Age 17 Advances to Governor’s Desk

State Rep.Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) introduced legislation, which is now on the Governor's desk, allowing 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections if they will be 18 by the general election.

SPRINGFIELD, IL – To increase political engagement and participation, State Representative Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) introduced legislation, which is now on the Governor’s desk, allowing 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections if they will be 18 by the general election.

“We are talking about young adults who are already voting for candidates in the general election – I believe it’s only fair to allow them to have a voice in who makes it to the general election,” Sente said. “Hopefully, if we offer young adults this opportunity to have a greater say in the political process, they will begin to form a habit of voting, participating in civics, and contributing to the betterment of our state.”

Once House Bill 226 is signed, it will go into effect on January 1, 2014.
