Y News for the week of October 28:

Last Call for Junior High Art Show. The Y will present its 2nd Annual Juried Junior High Art Show in November, sponsored by the Northbrook Arts Commission. The competition is open to all students in grades 6-8, with cash prizes awarded to the top three entries for each grade. Drop off your framed 2-D artwork at the Y front desk by October 31, and join us for the official show opening and awards ceremony on November 3 at 4:00pm. Happy Halloween! The Y’s building will be open regular hours on October 31, but no children’s programs will be held after 3:00pm. For more information, call 847 272 7250.

Adventure Guides Campouts. Adventure Guides provides the perfect opportunity for dads to bond with their kids ages 5-9. Our new Navigators group (children in Northbrook and Glenview, or NSYMCA members) will hold its campout for boys and dads on November 2-3 at Camp Minikani in Hubertus, WI. NEW: Adventure Moms! The North Suburban Y is launching a new Adventure Guides group for mothers with kids age 5-9 who want to connect, share, and play. Come to an introductory meeting on November 7 from 11:00 to noon to meet other moms and start planning events. Childcare, coffee and snacks will be provided! Basketball Season is Here. The Y’s Developmental Basketball League for boys and girls in grades K-6 starts on November 2. Participants learn the fundamentals of basketball, good sportsmanship, and teamwork. Registration includes a team jersey. Travel Basketball Tryouts. Boys and girls in grades 5 through 8 are invited to tryout for the NSYMCA travel basketball teams. Tryouts will be held November 5 and 7 at 6:30pm. This competitive league for advanced players includes twice a week practices. Away games may be held in Lake Zurich, Palatine, Schaumburg, Des Plaines, Evanston, and Glen Ellyn. Kids Ride to the Y. Simplify your life – let the Y Bus pick up your kids after school and bring them to their Y classes! Transportation is available for a small fee from elementary and middle schools in Northbrook and Glenview. Contact Shannon Cartier at scartier@nsymca.org for more information.

Basketball/Volleyball Private Lessons. Hoping to jumpstart a new sport, or focus on perfecting your skills? The Y offers private basketball and volleyball lessons for all ages to deliver customized coaching in a comfortable setting. Contact Carol Sassorossi, csassorossi@nsymca.org,  for more information.

New for Fall II: Indoor Kayak Class! Learn the basic skills of kayaking in the Y’s pool from American Canoe Association instructors. Kayaks and equipment will be provided. Classes are available for grades 5-8 on Saturday mornings and high school through adult on Thursday evenings. Classes start the week of October 28. For more information, visit www.nsymca.org.

New Fitness Programs: If you’re looking to pump up your fitness routine, check out the Y’s options for small group training and classes. Programs like Strength, Stability and Heart, Tabata, Jump Start and Off-Season Triathlon Training will keep you in great shape all winter long. Exercise Connection, a leader in physical fitness training for individuals with special needs, now offers a fitness course for adults with autism spectrum disorders at the North Suburban Y. Classes focus on core skills including body image, posture, motor coordination, muscular fitness and cardiovascular fitness.  Northbrook resident and Director in Training for the Exercise Connection, Laura Fine will lead the class. Class size is limited and one-on-one aide support is available. The Y is proud to offer professional massage services from Align Wellness Center. Appointments are available for 25 minute or 55 minute sessions in our comfortable Health Center, adjacent to our adult locker rooms. Sign up for appointments at the Y front desk. Do you have a child in half-day kindergarten? Enrich their experience with the Y’s Kindergarten Club extension program! Kindergarten Club creates a fun, full-day experience to support your child’s social and academic development. Afternoon sessions are available, including transportation to/from public schools in Northbrook  as well as St. Norbert’s. Hot lunches, snacks, and even swim lessons are all included! Also, check out Y-Time, the NSYMCA’s afterschool program for grades K-5. Limited openings available in each program. Parents, please note: non-member guests under the age of 18 must have a signed waiver on file to use YMCA facilities. Please stop by the front desk for more information. Also, unattended children under age 10 are not permitted in the building.
