High School Hopes

How does an incoming freshman girl feel about starting high school? Here's what she has to say.

Tomorrow I will be entering the intimidating world of high school. This foreign world leaves an extreme amount of mystery and wonder to what lies ahead. Some kids are terrified to step into a new environment knowing a limited amount of people and some feel like they can conquer the school on the first day. Then there are the kids like me who have mixed emotions. When asked the question, “Are you nervous for high school?” I am hesitant to respond. Do I respond with an, “Of course! Who wouldn’t be?” Or do I reply with something like, “No way. I am confident and ready to start a new chapter of my life.” I guess the best answer for me is a mixture of both.

Obviously I have the typical anxious thoughts about the school year. So many ideas about high school have been planted in my head throughout the years. We are warned to be careful of peer pressure and make sure to make time for homework. My opinion about high school was affected at an early age from the outrageous stories I’ve heard. I’m absolutely terrified to be caught up in the wrong friend group or to choke on a big test. Although these things scare me, I know my strong conscience will lead me to the right people and through the good and the bad; I’m paving my OWN way through high school.

Along with the nerves comes pure excitement. I’m excited to be considered more of an adult than ever before in my life. I can’t wait to explore my options and express my creativity. I know that high school is a place where I can try new things and discover what I love to do and what I’m good at. Not only am I excited to try new things, I’m beyond excited to meet new people. Being in the same school district for eight long years can definitely affect my relationships with my peers. I’ve made the best friends I could possibly make, and I have learned what characteristics I value in my friends. In high school, there is a never-ending amount of people to become friends with. I can expand my horizons and meet all kinds of people.

The next four years are a pit of endless opportunities. As much as my parents, drivers on the road, and teachers are scared for us incoming freshmen, they can be confident we’ll make the right choices, choose not to text and drive, and do our homework to the best of our ability. I guess if these people can have faith, then we should too. So here’s to starting over, making new friends, and walking into high school with our heads held high.
