Many people are competitive by nature. We want to be in first place, succeed, and win that contest. Many of us say we never win. We hear it all the time from friends or family… “I never win anything!” But guess what? Did you know that you have already won? As parents you have already won, not only by being fortunate enough to have children, but by being the number one influence in your child’s life when it comes to substance use prevention. In fact, three out of four youth say parents are the number one influence in their life when in comes to making decisions about drinking. Your own actions along with communicating about substance use both send strong messages to your child. Don’t assume your child already knows how you feel about drugs and alcohol. Talking to them and making your position clear can make a significant difference when it comes to preventing substance abuse. Prevention also means being involved with your child’s day to day activities. So well done! You are number one. It doesn’t happen every day for most of us, so take advantage of it and you and your child will both continue to be winners.
