Disc Golf, Dog Show, Stampede…Oh My!

Buffalo Grove’s Park District is not closing the week of Buffalo Grove Days.  In fact, the Park District is working overtime to supplement the festival with adventuresome events for all ages.

The “Friends of the Park Foundation” is sponsoring the 9th Annual Doubles Disc Golf Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 31, 9:30 am – 2:30 pm. at Willow Stream Park and Twin Creeks Park.  Teams will consist of two players scoring in a best-shot format. Two rounds of 18 holes will be played, one round at Willow Stream Park, and one round at Twin Creeks Park.  There is a 36-team limit. Play will be by PDGA rules and PDGA approved golf discs are required. This is an all ages tournament and will be played rain or shine.  If there is thunder and/or lightning the day of the tournament, the Park District will determine a new tournament date. Lunch will be served between rounds at Twin Creeks Park and an award ceremony will be held immediately following the tournament at Willow Stream Park.  Early bird registration is $17 before August 23.  After that, the fee rises to $20.

The 31st Annual Dog Show will also be held on Aug. 31 at 11 am at Willow Stream Park near the pool entrance.  Sponsored by Grove Animal Hospital, amateur dogs can enter events including best-groomed, celebrity look-alike, best couple (dog and owner), best trick, best behaved and best costume.  Prizes and raffles are included.  No advance registration is required and it’s FREE!

Also on Saturday at 1:30 pm, the Main Stage will host the Hot Shots Dance Team from the Buffalo Grove Park District’s Studio of Dance.  The dancers, ages six-15, will be performing a variety of dance styles including jazz, tap, lyrical, hip hop and more.

The 18th Annual Buffalo Grove Stampede, also sponsored by the Friends of the Parks Foundation, returns on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 8 am.  Last year’s race had 1104 timed finishers.  Races include a walk, 5k Run, 10k Run and a 5k wheelchair.  Both the 5K and the 10K courses are CARA certified and the 10k is again part of the CARA's Runner Choice Circuit for 2013.  For the runs, participants are separated by gender and age.  All ages and genders are together for the walk.  Fees range from $13 to $30 depending on the type of race, number of family members participating and the date of registration.  All fees increase the day of the race.  Online registration must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28.  The Stampede takes place at the Mike Rylko Park, 951 McHenry Road.  For more information and registration details, please visit BGStampede.org.
