Buffalo Grove Days Dedicates a Day for People with Disabilities

For members of the Buffalo Grove Days Committee and the Commission for Residents with Disabilities, Monday morning of the festival makes all of the hard work worthwhile.  Why?  It’s when our committees come together to produce Food & Fun for Residents with Disabilities.  You might be thinking, “Wait. Don’t we have food and fun all weekend long at Buffalo Grove Days?”  The answer is:  yes we do.  But on Monday morning, it’s time to make special plans for those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to fully enjoy Buffalo Grove Days like the rest of us.  Food & Fun is a part of our home-grown Buffalo Grove Days festival that is specially designed for people with disabilities.

With this program, Buffalo Grove opens its annual festival to hundreds of these valued residents by adding entertainment specifically designed for them.  Guests are treated to free carnival rides, lunch and entertainment.  A DJ spins tunes for dancing.  This year, appearances by Skates, Staley the Chicago Bear, and Tommy Hawk are scheduled.  Ronald McDonald will also make a return visit bringing great joy to the guests.  There will even be a magic show.  FREE carnival rides are courtesy of North American Midway Entertainment.  Food is donated by Culver’s, TGIFridays, and Outback.  Plus, Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove made a financial donation to the event.

Food & Fun takes place in the Emmerich Parking Lot and on the grounds of the carnival.  It will be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, 10 am – 12 noon.  Pre-registration is required for this event by Fri. Aug 30.  Up to four immediate family members or caregivers may accompany a disabled guest.  Additional people are $10 per person.  To register or get more information, call 847-808-5555, ext. 4.

Another fine example of Buffalo Grove’s sense of community is the Commission for Residents with Disabilities’ Buddy Baseball Exhibition Game.  This year, the game will be played on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 4 pm at Kendrigan Field at Twin Creeks Park.  In past years, my daughter served as a buddy and was one of many youth and adults that showed up to volunteer.  Volunteers and players alike left the game happy and fulfilled.  If you’re looking for something fun to do, attend the game and cheer on your favorite athlete.  Food for this event is donated by Lou Malnati’s Pizza. Goode Bags were donated by Family Benefit Solutions for every player.

Both of these events are planned and coordinated by the Buffalo Grove Days Committee and the Commission for Residents with Disabilities.
