Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band to Perform Its 11th Annual Fall Concert - November 10th

Upcoming Concert by the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band on November 10 to feature classic music of Wind and Jazz Bands - in Libetryville at Libertyville High School!

The Buffalo Grove Symphonic and Jazz Bands will be performing "BIG BAND CLASSICS" at Libertyville High School on Saturday evening, November 10 at 7 PM.  Libertyville High School is just a short jaunt away from our home base in Buffalo Grove. We hope to make many new friends and fans in addition to those of you who have already heard one of the finest Community Bands in the area!

Our concert theme is “Big Band Classics”. This is not just music that comes from the American popular jazz style of “Big Bands” from the 1930’s-through today, but also established and destined-to-... become classics of the Symphonic Band Literature that are written on a grand scale. For those who are familiar with that style of composition we hope you will revisit old friends in our performance of the Holst Second Suite and George Washington Bridge. Slava will amuse and entertain you in a manner that only Leonard Bernstein can with a mix of Vaudeville, Broadway, and Symphonic style all compressed into 3 minutes! Our performance will be rounded out with the poignancy of Eric Whitacre’s lovely “October” and our concluding number – the by turns transcendental and powerful “Give Us This Day” by David Maslanka.

Our Jazz Band will entertain you tonight with Duke Ellington’s seminal “Cottontail”. Also, Conductor and Clarinetist Howard Green will “front” the group on Artie Shaw’s swing-based Clarinet Concerto. Not to be outdone on the Big Band score by their Jazz Band colleagues our flutes, clarinets, oboes, horns, bassoons, and euphoniums will join them for the wonderful Warren Barker arrangement of In the Miller Mood where EVERYONE will swing.

The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band was started in October 2001 by the Village of Buffalo Grove Arts Commission and Howard Green, Music Director and Conductor. The band is one of the premiere Symphonic Bands with several performances through the year.  More about the Band can be found on its website, www.bgsb.org, or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Buffalo-Grove-Symphonic-Band/146432254584.

Whether you like Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, and Glenn Miller, Modern Composers like William Schuman, or Wind Band composers like Eric Whitacre and David Maslanka - there will be something there for you to love.  Live music by a dedicated group of fine musicians - and all for less than the cost of a first-run movie!
