Buffalo Grove Green Fair Educates Visitors, Repurposes Many Items

Citizens had chances to learn how to live greener lifestyles and drop off a wide range of items for recycling at Sunday's Green Fair.

The Buffalo Grove event offered opportunities for all ages. Young children had the chance to see a Waste Management truck up close, and some, such as 4-year-old Anand Dastidar of Buffalo Grove, got into the green spirit by donating unwanted bicycles to nonprofit Working Bikes.

The Chicago-based organization distributes donated bikes of all sizes domestically and internationally to people in need. Highland Park resident Phil Kaplan, a volunteer with the organization, said he expected to collect about 25 bike at the Buffalo Grove event.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Grove Lions Club collected eyeglasses. The club was promoted by Buffalo Grove resident Dennis Spaeth, who spent the warm summer morning greeting fair-goers while dressed as the the organization's furry mascot.

"I'm not just 'lion' around," he said, his voice muffled by the costume's lion head, as he waved to children and gave them high-fives.

Also recycled at the event were gym shoes and crayons, which were collected by the Buffalo Grove Park District on behalf of organizations that will give the items new lives.
