Wheeling Orchesis Presents Its Main Concert for 2013, "We Have Arrived"

Wheeling High School Orchesis, under the direction of Diane Rawlinson, will perform its main concert of the school year, "We Have Arrived," Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21- 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the school's Robert Sang Theater.  Tickets are $8 and will be available at the door.

The concert will celebrate the diversity and creativity of the 29 members in Orchesis.  Dance styles to be performed include tap, lyrical, jazz, African, modern, and musical theater.

Guest artist pieces were created by the following: Ben Burke (WHS Orchesis alumnus), Brandon DiCriscio (former River North dancer), Crystal Ellis-Abdullah (Orchesis assistant), Tim Heck (current cast member of Sleep No More in New York), and Marc Marcaranas (independent artist originally from California).   At the Friday night concert, 5th grade students from Anne Sullivan School in Prospect Heights will be guest performers.

This year Orchesis is celebrating the careers of many of the organization's alumni who have continued in dance-related fields.   In addition to Burke’s work, alumnae Brittany Cederburg’s students will perform in the Thursday concert.  The WHS Orchesis Winter Showcase last December highlighted the students of Anna Sapozhnikov, in addition to performers Jessica Kovarik, Rachael Fromkin, Jerry Rivera, and Dani Bitout. Alumnae Christine Selander’s students will perform at the benefit; Sara Lazar will teach a day of master classes on Feb. 19, and additional alumni will teach during the Physical Education departments bi-annual "Fit For Life" days at the end of April.

The busy Orchesis season continues at 5 p.m. on March 3, when it hosts Dance for Life’s "Next Generation" for the 19th year, featuring 11 youth companies performing professionally choreographed works by some of Chicago’s finest artists.   All proceeds are donated to Dance For Life and The Children’s Place Association. Tickets for the benefit are $12.
