Shir Hadash Synagogue to Host Religious School Open House this Sunday, April 28

Local synagogue stages religious school open house.

Shir Hadash Synagogue will host a religious school open house this Sunday, April 28, at 11:30 a.m.

Along with traditional Jewish curriculum, Shir Hadash students learn Israeli dance, drama, music and art, and study for their bar and bat mitzvahs, which are tailored to their unique interests and personalities.

The school has been headed by Educator Director Emily Ascher since 2008.

The unique religious school meets once a week, on Sunday in Deerfield. However, starting next fall, school will meet at the synagogue’s new home at 200 W. Dundee Road in Wheeling.

Ascher said she loves working with the children and staff at Shir Hadash and believes that each child is turned on to Judaism in his or her own way. “It is my mission is to ensure that all children find their niche at Shir Hadash,” she said, “and that they feel included, proud and confident in their Judaism.

Ascher graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago with a degree in Elementary Education, has worked as a teacher in Wheeling Consolidated School District 21, and has worked at Shir Hadash since 1996.

Operating out of rented facilities in several northern suburbs for the past 18 years, Shir Hadash recently purchased a new building at 200 W. Dundee Road and plans to move this summer.

The growing synagogue draws members from Northbrook, Glenview, Deerfield, Highland Park, Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights and Palatine as well as Chicago, Skokie, Park Ridge, Barrington and Gurnee.
