Starlights Skaters Score Winter Wins in Wisconsin

Local synchronized skaters shine in latest competition.

On a frigid day when most of Wisconsin was gearing up for Packers playoff football in Green Bay, the Buffalo Grove-based Starlights Synchronized Skating Teams hit the ice down the road in Fond du Lac and impressed crowds with their own variety of success through strong teamwork. In their first competition of the New Year, five Starlights teams won medals at the 2013 Foot of the Lake Synchronized Skating Classic.

Leading the way were the elementary school-age members of the Starlights Preliminary Team, winning first place gold medals in performing to the music of “Annie.” It’s the second gold medal performance in a row for the team, which also took first place at Ann Arbor in December.

Three Starlights teams earned second place silver medals, including the Starlights Novice Team, performing in multi-colored dresses to music from, “The Wizard of Oz.” The Starlights Juvenile team also captured second place in their division as they performed to music from, “Aladdin.” The Novice and Juvenile teams primarily feature skaters in junior high and high school.

The youngest skaters who compete on the Starlights Beginner Team also earned silver medals after tying for second place in a tight competition. Beginner skaters wowed crowds again with their “Witch Doctor” program theme. The Open Juvenile Team earned third place bronze medals while performing in bright pink to a program theme of “Back in Time.” Skaters on the Intermediate team performed their “Smash” musical-themed routine in earning a 6th place finish and members of the Starlights Adult Team had the ice all to themselves in a strong performance as the solo Adult-level team featured in the competition.

January is a busy month for all Starlights teams, with early morning and evening practices to get ready for three more competitions coming up in Michigan and Illinois. This season there are eight different teams featuring a total of 129 skaters ranging in age from the youngest on the Beginner Team to experienced skaters of the Starlights Senior and Adult Teams.
